This course is an enjoyable course for adults and children from 10 years old. You will learn everything you need to safely dive in open water using scuba equipment.

PADI is the largest diving organisation in the world and its certifications are recognised worldwide.

The course consists of at least 10 theory and pool sessions at TU/e, 2 deep water sessions at Tongelreep and 4 open water dives, all provided in a fun, relaxed and friendly way.

The theory lessons in dutch or english (sign up for the correct course) are easy to understand and are a supplement to the PADI eLearning. For people with dyslexia, additional guidance is available (please ask your instructor).

The course is completed with the final mandatory open water dive during our fun family diving weekend at Grevelingen Lake in Zeeland, also known as the Scyllus weekend.

This course prepares you to prevent accidents and, when necessary, to act in emergency situations. It will certainly increase your confidence and improve your skills.
With fun and interesting theory lessons:

  • how to handle stress in divers
  • procedures for providing assistance
  • everything about self-reliance
  • how to assist other divers

Most rescue course participants consider this the most enjoyable and active diving course.

You will practise, among other things:

  • bringing an unconscious diver safely to the shore
  • providing necessary first aid using the knowledge and experience gained
  • various rescue scenarios

In addition to the 10 theory and pool sessions at the TU/e swimming pool, the course also includes 2 deep water sessions in Tongelreep and an open water dive. The course is then completed with a Rescue weekend in Zeeland. Besides being very educational, such a weekend is also very sociable and enjoyable. The cost for this weekend has been approximately €130 all-in in recent years.

Before certification, you must also complete the DAN Basic course or another recognised first aid and CPR course. This training is included in the Scyllus Rescue course fee. You may also choose to follow a first aid and CPR course elsewhere. At the time of certification, you must hold a valid certificate. In that case, the first aid course fee will be deducted from the course price.

Minimum age: 12 years
Requirement: Advanced Open Water Diver Certificate
Course duration: September to June

Looking for the first step towards a career in the diving world?

Your adventure at instructor level begins with the PADI Divemaster programme. In this programme you work closely with a PADI Instructor. You expand your diving knowledge and refine your skills to a professional level.

The PADI Divemaster course develops your leadership skills, qualifying you to supervise certain diving activities and assist instructors with students. Being a PADI Divemaster is a requirement to participate in the PADI Assistant Instructor and PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor courses.

During the PADI Divemaster programme, you develop leadership skills for diving through both classroom sessions and self-study. You complete water skills and endurance exercises, as well as training sessions that improve your organisational and problem-solving abilities, and you learn how to guide others in diving.

You apply this knowledge in practice through a structured internship or a series of practical exercises.

The diving equipment:

You will use all standard diving equipment and a number of accessories such as a dive slate, dive knife, compass, dive watch, etc. It is highly recommended that you have your own diving equipment, as your diving skills will improve when you are familiar with your own gear.

Requirements:
  • In possession of a PADI Rescue Diver (Junior) certification or an equivalent certification from another organisation
  • Completion of the DAN Basic First Aid course (or an equivalent recognised first aid and CPR course), not older than 2 years
  • Minimum of 20 logged dives to start the course and 60 dives required for certification
  • Good health: fit to dive; a medical statement signed by a doctor within the past year must be submitted
Good to know:

Full certification is possible from the age of 18.
Up to the age of 18, it is possible to obtain a Junior Divemaster certification.

The certification application fee (PADI fee) must be paid separately directly to PADI upon completion of the course (with the exception of the Junior Divemaster, which must be paid via Scyllus).

If you have any questions about the Divemaster course, feel free to ask one of the instructors on a Friday evening

As a PADI Assistant Instructor, you not only gain valuable experience as a PADI professional, but you also learn how the PADI system of dive instruction works. You can assist with teaching and take on limited instructional responsibilities. It is an excellent way to gain experience before becoming a diving instructor.

The PADI Assistant Instructor course is the first step within the PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC). After completing this course, you can continue with the Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI) course. Successfully passing the Instructor Examination (IE) will lead to certification as a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor.

Why this course is so rewarding

You will be guided by a mentor and gain hands-on experience teaching real students, which makes this course both educational and highly practical.

What you will learn

You will learn how to organise and supervise dive activities, with a strong focus on developing your teaching skills. The course consists of:

  • Theory: self-study, quizzes, lessons and presentations.
  • Confined water: review and evaluation of skills, as well as workshops and presentations.
  • Open water: workshops, evaluation of rescue skills and presentations by candidates.

Who teaches the course

Scyllus places great importance on high-quality instructor development and offers everyone the opportunity to grow further within diving. Our two PADI IDC Staff Instructors deliver the Assistant Instructor course in cooperation with Course Director René Bakens from SEALAND Diving. This ensures a smooth transition into the Instructor course.

Requirements

  • You must hold a PADI Divemaster certification or an equivalent certification from another organisation
  • You must have completed a DAN Basic First Aid course (or an equivalent first aid and CPR course), not older than 2 years
  • A minimum of 60 logged dives is required for certification
  • You must be in good health and fit to dive; a medical statement signed by a doctor within the past year is required

The certification application fee (PADI fee) is not included and must be paid directly to PADI upon completion of the course.
